2019 Far West Scholarship winners!
Congratulations to Jasmine Arrison and Luca Robillard, who were selected as the inaugural Marce Herz Far West Skiing Scholarship recipients. We felt they best exemplified the Foundation and were the embodiment of Marce’s ideals of dedication, self-discipline and integrity. These athletes display these characteristics in their lives, education, and their ambitious athletic goals. The Marce Herz Foundation is proud to help these athletes achieve their goals and to be a part of their season.
Jasmine Arrison – U19 Athlete
Jasmine was selected as the first female Marce Herz Far West Skiing Scholarship recipient. The Scholarship Committee felt she best described her hard work and dedication to her sport as demonstrated through her work ethic off snow, “This summer, I spent two months at Mount Hood, washing dishes in exchange for time on snow. Not the most glamorous way to spend my summer, but it taught me that if I want to be dedicated to my sport, I have to put in the work.” Jasmine continued, “After a hard day on the hill, sometimes the last thing I wanted to do was wash dishes, but more time in the kitchen meant more time on the hill.” Jasmine explained how she truly learned and lived the values held dear by Marce Herz, “I think this summer was the first time where I realized what dedication, self-discipline, and integrity were. Because of this, I have grown a lot more as a person. Not thinking just of myself and my goals but also how to help others reach theirs as I try to reach mine. This summer taught me that the things you learn in ski racing apply to everything in life.” Jasmine also learned how to prioritize and find balance, “For example, putting time away to do homework instead of hanging out with friends, making sure when you are at the gym, you do that extra five sets of bike sprints, and making sure that you are honest to everyone around you. I finally understood what my coaches meant by ‘you need to be a good person before you can be a good skier.’” Additionally, Jasmine’s letters of recommendation stress her volunteer work in her community, her good sportsmanship, and her leadership. Most recently Jasmine has made the Far West Academic Team with a 4.0 in the Spring of 2020 and in 2021 has been accepted to Montana State University on an academic Scholarship! Jasmine continues to train, ski and grow as an athlete as well as a person. We are so proud of you Jasmine! Can’t wait to see what you do next! The Marce Herz Foundation is proud to award this $1,000 scholarship to this hard working athlete.
Luca Robillard – U19 Athlete
Luca was selected as the first male Marce Herz Far West Skiing Scholarship recipient. Luca has an amazing combination of life-actions he takes to ensure that he can maintain academic excellence concurrently with athletic achievement. Setting goals and living them takes determination and focus. Luca has incorporated philanthropic volunteer work in snowsport-related roles helping mentor youth – a specific mission Marce Herz was passionate in support of - as well as mountain bike trail maintenance, organic farming and contribution to his local Food Bank, assisting those in need. On top of this, he helps fund his skiing through Summer employment at a bike shop and restaurant work. Luca has a portfolio of awards to be proud of in both Alpine Skiing – Western Regional Qualification among others - and Mountain Biking – top 5 placements in his respective age groups. These accolades paired with above-average academic achievement have earned him support with several other foundations and clubs. Finally, Luca’s letters of recommendation from his coaches and teacher have a resounding theme – an amazing young man that truly cares for others, consistently projects a positive attitude, and has passion for what he does which has led him from strength to strength as he works towards many future goals within sports as well as life. The Marce Herz Foundation is proud to award this $1,000 scholarship to this hard working athlete.
